Mac gamers on Steam are increasingly adopting Apple’s M-Series chips, with the M4 chip emerging as the most popular choice, according to user data from Valve. In December 2025, 19.6% of Macs running Steam were powered by the M4 system-on-chip, surpassing the previous favorite, the M1 chip, which held an 18.06% share. The M4 chip, introduced in October 2024, continues to dominate among Steam users, even after the release of the M5 chip with the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

The M5 chip, offering up to 45% faster graphics than the M4 and 2.5 times faster than the M1, currently lags in usage among Mac gamers on Steam, likely due to its availability exclusively in the 14-inch MacBook Pro. In contrast, the M4 chip is utilized in a wide range of current Mac models, including the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and 24-inch iMac. Higher-end versions of the M4 chip are also present in the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Studio, further solidifying its popularity among users.

Ranking below the M4 and M1 chips are the M2 and M3 chips, with shares of 13.08% and 7.31% on Steam, respectively. Despite the M3’s advanced features like hardware-accelerated ray tracing, the M2 remains more favored, possibly due to its longer presence in the market. The M5 chip, introduced in October 2025, holds a mere 1% share among Mac gamers on Steam.

The survey also reveals that most Mac gamers have 16 GB of RAM and are running macOS Tahoe 26 on their machines. Interestingly, the primary display resolution for OSX users is 1440 x 900, with 19.76% prevalence, while the most common multi-monitor desktop resolution is 3840 x 2160. English is the predominant language among Mac gamers, with 69.67% usage, and a significant portion of users face storage constraints, with 34.19% having 10-99 GB of free hard drive space.

Apple’s efforts to attract gamers and developers to the Mac platform have seen mixed success, but the M4 chip has emerged as a popular choice among Mac gamers. While the M5 chip is expected to gain traction in future surveys as more Mac models adopt it, the M4’s current dominance raises questions about how long it will take for the newer chip to surpass it in popularity among Steam users.
