Microsoft’s Ad-Supported Xbox Cloud Gaming Service Nearing Public Testing

In a groundbreaking move, Microsoft has been conducting trials of its ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming service for several months. The revelation, initially disclosed in October, has now progressed to the point where the technology behemoth is on the verge of testing the free streaming option with Xbox Insiders.

Recent updates to the Xbox app over the weekend have unveiled loading screens for Xbox Cloud Gaming, indicating “1 hour of ad-supported playtime per session.” This development aligns with Microsoft’s internal testing procedures, which have been limited to one-hour sessions, allowing users up to five hours of free play per month.

Insider sources have revealed that internal testing includes approximately two minutes of preroll ads before users can access free game streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming. The ad-supported version of the service will enable users to stream games they own, as well as explore eligible Free Play Days titles during weekends. Additionally, users will have the opportunity to stream Xbox Retro Classics games with preroll ads.

Following the initial report, Microsoft officially confirmed its testing of the ad-supported service. With an imminent public testing phase expected in the coming weeks, the official announcement of the service is highly anticipated.
