WhatsApp Introduces New “Strict Account Settings” for Enhanced Cybersecurity

WhatsApp is set to launch a new feature called “Strict Account Settings” that aims to provide additional protection against cyberattacks. This feature is specifically designed for individuals at a higher risk of being targeted, such as journalists and public figures. It automatically blocks attachments and media from unknown senders, as well as silences calls from unfamiliar contacts.

The new setting goes beyond just blocking unknown contacts. It also includes features like turning off link previews, restricting who can add you to a group, and preventing non-contacts from viewing your profile photo, “about” details, and online status. WhatsApp advises users to enable this feature only if they believe they may be the target of a sophisticated cyber campaign, as most people are not typically targeted in this manner.

WhatsApp has always prioritized security, offering end-to-end encryption to its users. The platform further strengthened its security measures following incidents where users were targeted with spyware, such as the NSO Group’s Pegasus, which allowed unauthorized access to devices through phone calls. In response, Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, took legal action against the NSO Group and was awarded $167.25 million in damages. Additionally, WhatsApp successfully shut down a spyware campaign targeting journalists and members of civil society last year.

Recent claims have surfaced suggesting that Meta and WhatsApp have the ability to access private chats. However, Andy Stone, Meta’s head of communications, refuted these allegations, stating that WhatsApp uses the Signal protocol for encryption. He dismissed the lawsuit as “a frivolous work of fiction.”

The rollout of Strict Account Settings is expected in the coming weeks. Users can enable this feature by navigating to WhatsApp settings, selecting “Privacy,” tapping on “Advanced,” and choosing the corresponding option. It is important to note that this feature can only be activated from the primary device and not through WhatsApp for the web.
