iOS 26.2 Upgrade Restrictions: Moving Forward Only
Apple has recently ceased signing iOS 12, iOS 15, iOS 16, and iOS 18, along with iOS 26.2, after the release of iOS 26.2.1. This decision prevents users from downgrading to previous versions of the operating system.
When Apple deems an iOS update to be stable or includes significant security fixes, they stop signing earlier versions. This move effectively restricts users from reverting to older iOS versions.
The latest iOS 26.2.1 update introduced support for the second generation AirTag and included bug fixes. However, no specific security fixes or CVEs (public identifiers for tracking security vulnerabilities) were listed in the release notes.
Apart from iOS 26.2, Apple has also stopped signing iOS 12.5.7, iOS 15.8.5, iOS 16.7.12, and iOS 18.7.3 following the release of iOS 12.5.8, iOS 15.8.6, iOS 16.7.14, and iOS 18.7.4.
For users running iOS 26.2.1, the inability to downgrade to iOS 26.2 or any earlier version means they must stick with the current software version.
In addition to these updates, Apple has also taken steps to stop signing several older iOS versions, restricting users from reverting to previous software iterations.
