Exciting News: Android Devices to Soon Have AirDrop Compatibility!

Google has officially confirmed that support for Apple’s AirDrop file sharing feature will soon be available on more Android smartphones.

During a media briefing at Google’s Taipei office, Eric Kay, Vice President of Engineering for the Android platform, announced that Android Quick Share’s compatibility with iOS AirDrop would be extended to non-Pixel smartphones in 2026.

According to a report by Android Authority, Kay mentioned that the primary engineering challenge was to enable the feature not only between Android phones and iPhones but also with iPads and Macs.

“Having successfully implemented it,” Kay stated, “we are collaborating with our partners to expand it across the entire ecosystem, and you can expect some exciting announcements very soon.”

A recent timeline of Android AirDrop compatibility

The Google Pixel 10 series first received support for Apple’s AirDrop file sharing protocol in November.

Shortly after, Qualcomm announced that the feature would be introduced to non-Pixel Android phones powered by Snapdragon processors “in the near future.”

Around the same time, British tech company Nothing confirmed that AirDrop compatibility would be added to its devices, with hopes for other brands to follow suit.

AirDrop compatibility was recently extended to older Pixel devices, and there has been anticipation for broader compatibility news.

In a move to facilitate seamless data transfers between the competing platforms, the Google executive also mentioned that they are working on making it simpler to switch between iOS and Android, a trend that more users seem willing to explore than ever before.
