In summary:

Tech Advisor’s report reveals that Apple is considering incorporating a 200MP periscope telephoto lens in future iPhones, but this upgrade may not be available until the release of the iPhone 20 Pro in 2028.

Brands like Oppo, Xiaomi, and Honor have already introduced advanced 200MP telephoto technology in their current flagship devices, giving them a significant lead in the market.

If implemented, this potential camera enhancement would greatly enhance the zoom capabilities of Apple’s smartphones, although iPhone users might have to wait longer compared to Android users.

Recent reports suggest that Apple may not launch its own iPhone with a 200MP telephoto camera for a couple of years.

Our Managing Editor, Chris Martin, is currently in China testing out the Oppo Find X9 Ultra, which boasts a remarkable 200MP telephoto camera.

One of the standout features of the Oppo Find X9 Ultra is its impressive 200MP telephoto camera, as shown in a photo of a panda with detailed fur.

Apple is reportedly exploring ways to enhance the telephoto capabilities of its iPhone lineup, following in the footsteps of brands like Oppo.

However, recent reports indicate that the development of this technology may take longer than anticipated.

iPhone telephoto upgrade delayed

A reputable source, Digital Chat Station, has confirmed via Weibo that “Apple is considering a 200MP periscope telephoto lens.”

The source hints at a potential delay for this upgrade, stating that it is “most likely 2028.”

Earlier reports suggested that Apple might introduce a 200MP telephoto camera in 2027 with the iPhone 19 Pro, coinciding with the 20-year anniversary of the first iPhone.

If the latest reports are accurate, the iPhone 20 Pro could see a significant zoom enhancement in 2028.

While Apple may lag behind in certain smartphone innovations, the brand is expected to excel in implementing new technologies when they eventually arrive.

In the meantime, devices like the Oppo Find X9 Pro, Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and Honor Magic 8 Pro are vying for consumer attention.
