Marco Wittmann has significantly bolstered his bid for the 2026 DTM championship, showcasing a stellar performance at the Nürburgring. The BMW M works driver’s podium finish on Saturday was followed by a remarkable victory on Sunday, solidifying his strongest weekend of the season and delivering a crucial outcome for Schubert Motorsport. Notably, this win marked Wittmann’s first triumph since the 2024 Zandvoort race, elevating his total DTM victories to an impressive 20. More importantly, this achievement catapulted the two-time champion to fifth place in the driver standings, amassing a total of 135 points. With a 25-point gap from the championship leader and four races remaining, Wittmann stands as a formidable contender for the title.
Wittmann’s Dominance at Nürburgring
During the Nürburgring weekend, Wittmann showcased exceptional prowess behind the wheel of the #11 Schaeffler BMW M4 GT3 Evo, securing a fourth-place finish in Saturday’s qualifying that he transformed into a podium position, clinching third place in the race won by Ferrari’s Matteo Cairoli. Notably, this result marked a significant turnaround for BMW and Schubert Motorsport after enduring several challenging weekends earlier in the season. Sunday’s race proved even more triumphant as Wittmann, starting from sixth on the grid, navigated through a chaotic event marred by a multi-car collision at the first corner. Despite fierce competition from Thomas Preining in a Porsche and young talent Tom Kalender in a Mercedes-AMG, Wittmann held his ground and ultimately triumphed by a mere 0.517 seconds, securing a milestone win. Reflecting on his victory, Wittmann expressed gratitude to his team for executing flawless strategies and delivering impeccable pit stops.
BMW’s Season: A Rollercoaster Ride with Hope

BMW’s performance in the 2026 DTM season has been a mix of highs and lows. Van der Linde secured the first victory for BMW at Zandvoort, where Wittmann showcased a remarkable climb from 13th to third place. The Red Bull Ring races marked a strong start for Wittmann, positioning him as BMW’s most consistent early contender. However, subsequent rounds presented challenges, with BMW facing pace issues at Lausitzring and encountering setbacks at Norisring, including a tire failure for Wittmann and a harrowing accident for van der Linde. Despite these obstacles, Wittmann salvaged a fourth-place finish at Oschersleben, Schubert Motorsport’s home race. Heading into Nürburgring, BMW needed a substantial points haul to stay in the title race, a challenge Wittmann deftly met. Schubert Motorsport currently ranks third in the team standings with 201 points, trailing the leader by 30 points. While van der Linde faced setbacks at Nürburgring, BMW’s renewed competitiveness places them within striking distance of the championship, with Wittmann’s 25-point gap from the lead offering a realistic shot at the driver title as the season progresses.
