Stripe Acquires OpenRouter in a Multi-Billion Dollar Deal

In a recent development reported by Bloomberg, Stripe has officially completed the acquisition of OpenRouter, a significant move in the AI industry.

OpenRouter is a platform that assists users in choosing various AI models tailored to their specific requirements and financial constraints. The company made headlines earlier this year when it secured a substantial $113 million Series B funding round, with a valuation of $1.3 billion. Major investors in this round included Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet’s Capital G.

OpenRouter’s CEO, Alex Atallah, likened the company to a Stripe for AI, emphasizing its role as a centralized hub for diverse AI systems, ensuring flexibility and avoiding dependency on a single provider. With a user base of over 8 million globally, OpenRouter offers access to more than 400 AI models.

Rumors of an acquisition between Stripe and OpenRouter surfaced last month, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The speculations have now materialized into a deal valued at over $7 billion, according to the latest update from Bloomberg.

When approached for a statement, a spokesperson from Stripe declined to comment on the ongoing discussions, maintaining the company’s standard policy on addressing rumors and speculation.
