Expanded Availability: Apple Digital IDs Launch in 15 US States

Virginia has just made history by becoming the fifteenth US state to adopt digital driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet, surprising many who expected Oklahoma to be next in line. Although Oklahoma had shown signs of preparing for the digital transition last month, its new mobile ID law doesn’t go into effect until November 1, giving Virginia the opportunity to take the lead.

This development marks Virginia as the second state to introduce digital driver’s licenses this year, following Arkansas in May. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (VADMV) announced the feature with instructional videos on how to add a Virginia ID to Apple Wallet, how to present it to businesses, and how to use it at TSA checkpoints.

To add a digital ID, users must have their physical driver’s license on hand to capture the front and back of the card. The digital ID can be added to up to two iPhones and one Apple Watch, with security measures in place to ensure only the owner can access it through Face ID.

Virginia has provided an extensive FAQ to guide users through the process, highlighting that six airports in the state have TSA checkpoints equipped to accept digital driver’s licenses. Businesses with compliant mobile ID readers can also use the technology for identity and age verification. Additionally, Virginia offers the Virginia mID Verifier app on the App Store for businesses to scan mobile IDs from iPhones.

It’s important to note that digital driver’s licenses are not intended to replace physical cards, as stated in Virginia’s FAQ.
