Ford Ranger EV Delayed: Battery Technology Not Advanced Enough
Ford has confirmed that the highly anticipated fully electric version of Australia’s favorite vehicle, the Ford Ranger ute, may not be coming anytime soon. Despite previous speculations and the success of the plug-in Ranger Hybrid lineup in Australia, current EV technology and customer demand do not justify the move.
The idea of a pure-electric Ranger seemed promising with the launch of the now-discontinued F-150 Lightning EV in the US, the trademarking of the ‘Ranger Lightning’ name overseas, and the introduction of the plug-in Ranger Hybrid lineup in Australia. However, Ford’s vehicle program director for the T6 ‘Global Truck’ platform, Mario Brandini, stated that while they are exploring all possibilities with powertrains, EV technology is currently unable to match the capabilities of diesel or plug-in hybrid powertrains.
Ford Australia’s marketing director, Ambrose Henderson, also pointed out that Australia’s lack of EV charging infrastructure further hinders the possibility of a fully electric Ranger. The focus is on meeting the needs of customers in the Australian environment, where towing capabilities and infrastructure for full EVs are not yet at the required level.
While there are some plug-in hybrid utes available in Australia, only a few electric utes, such as the LDV eT60 and the KGM Musso EV, have been released. The Toyota HiLux BEV is set to arrive in local showrooms soon, and MG has confirmed the U9 EV for a local launch. The Isuzu D-Max EV was also confirmed for Australia in 2024, but the release timing is still pending.
In conclusion, the future of a fully electric Ford Ranger in Australia remains uncertain due to current EV technology limitations, customer demand, and inadequate charging infrastructure. The focus is on meeting customer needs and ensuring that technology can deliver the required capabilities in the Australian market. Transform the following sentence into a question:
