Exodus' former studio head James Ohlen touches on why he left Archetype Entertainment: "I was running on fumes"

The Departure of James Ohlen from Archetype Entertainment

In a surprising turn of events back in December, James Ohlen, the head of Archetype Entertainment, made the decision to leave the studio and his role as producer on Exodus. This move came as a shock, considering he co-founded the studio after retiring from BioWare in 2018. In a recent interview, Ohlen revealed that his departure was driven by burnout, a common experience in the game development industry.

Ohlen explained to PC Gamer, “I was running on fumes, and it was hurting my health, and my personal life, and everything. I just needed to step away.” As a creative individual deeply invested in his work, the pressures of leading a studio and constantly compromising on his vision took a toll on him. He emphasized the importance of not putting oneself in such a stressful situation for the sake of mental and physical well-being.

Despite being founded in 2019, Archetype Entertainment has yet to release a game. Ohlen reflected on the challenges of setting up a new studio with a focus on creating a major AAA title, questioning his initial decision. He admitted, “Maybe I fooled myself. I fooled myself that I wouldn’t be dying inside. But yeah, it was just too much.”

Managing a diverse team, navigating contract negotiations, and dealing with the pressures of a big-budget title like Exodus proved to be overwhelming for Ohlen. He shared his experiences of working on the game and the difficulties faced during the development process, including the complexities of securing Peter Hamilton as a consultant for the project.

Currently, Ohlen is directing his focus towards creating three RPG adventure books as part of Arcanum Worlds, a venture he established with Jesse Sky, his co-founder at Archetype Entertainment. Sky, a fellow BioWare alum, now serves as the creative director on Exodus. The challenges Ohlen faced in the AAA game development industry serve as a valuable lesson, highlighting the potential drawbacks of working on large-scale projects.

Ohlen’s journey in game development, including his experiences with Star Wars: The Old Republic, is a testament to the trials and tribulations faced by industry professionals. The full interview provides a deeper insight into his career and sheds light on the realities of working in the gaming sector.

In conclusion, James Ohlen’s departure from Archetype Entertainment serves as a reminder of the importance of self-care and finding a balance in a demanding industry. His story is a valuable lesson for aspiring game developers and industry veterans alike, emphasizing the need to prioritize mental well-being and creative fulfillment in the pursuit of success.
