Apple’s Always On Display feature has seen a subtle but significant change with the introduction of iOS 26. The default behavior now includes blurring wallpapers when the display is dimmed, a departure from the previous dimming effect.

Different Always On Display Modes

Previously, the Always On Display would simply dim the Lock Screen wallpaper. However, in iOS 26, the system now blurs the wallpaper by default, enhancing the visibility of the clock and widgets. While this alteration may improve legibility, it alters the aesthetic of the Lock Screen, especially for users who appreciate displaying photos.

Thankfully, a toggle option has been included to revert to the original behavior, providing users with the choice to opt for a clear wallpaper display.

In iOS 18, the Always On Display functioned similarly to its current state in iOS 26. It would display a dimmed version of the Lock Screen when the iPhone is locked, offering quick access to essential information such as the clock, date, notifications, and widgets. The screen would turn off completely under certain conditions like when face down, covered, in CarPlay, using Continuity Camera, in Low Power Mode, during Sleep Focus, or at bedtime.

While customization options have always been somewhat limited, they remain useful. Users can choose whether to display the wallpaper and notifications, allowing for a clean, utility-driven display or one that reflects their wallpaper and lock screen preferences.

Notable Change in iOS 26

With the latest iOS update, wallpapers are now blurred by default when the display is dimmed. While this alteration may enhance readability, some users may prefer not to have their wallpaper blurred. Fortunately, Apple has added a toggle in the Settings menu under Display & Brightness > Always On Display, allowing users to disable the blurred effect and return to the clear wallpaper display.

Users are encouraged to explore these options and determine their preferred display setting. Whether blurring enhances privacy and sensitivity or detracts from the user experience is a personal choice that can now be easily customized.
