Ensuring Mixtape’s Longevity: A Closer Look at the Licensing Process

When Mixtape was first released, many wondered about the fate of the game due to its extensive use of licensed music. The issue of music licensing is known to be complex and troublesome, leading to concerns about the game being delisted in the future. However, the developers of Mixtape have reassured fans that there is no need to worry. In an interview with Kotaku, creative director Johnny Galvatron revealed that Beethoven and Dinosaur, the developer of the game, made the decision to obtain licenses for all the songs in perpetuity. This means that, unless the universe meets its end, Mixtape will remain available for purchase indefinitely. Additionally, publisher Annapurna debunked rumors of the game being delisted due to licensing problems on Bwitter, putting any doubts to rest.

Galvatron also shed light on the process of securing licenses for the game’s soundtrack, mentioning that the team did not encounter any significant obstacles. The music supervisor set realistic expectations for the team, leading to a smooth licensing process. While some artists, like Pink Floyd, were off-limits, the studio was able to secure the majority of the songs they requested. Producer Woody Woodward expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that they got “pretty much everything [they] asked for.”

Further elaborating on the collaboration with musicians, Galvatron shared an anecdote about involving Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan in the process. He described a scene in the game where a character enthusiastically introduces a song by the band, receiving Corgan’s approval without hesitation. This interaction highlights the positive relationship between the developers and the artists featured in Mixtape.
