The Role of Gateways in Managing AI Tools and Data Access

In the realm of technology, a gateway serves as a crucial device, typically implemented in software, that acts as a front for various services. It plays a pivotal role in handling authentication, rate limits, logging, monitoring, and access control. With the increasing use of Managed Cloud Platforms (MCP), organizations are faced with the challenge of identifying which AI tools are accessing data from specific systems, determining the data they are permitted to access, and defining the actions they can execute on that data. Gateways offer a centralized platform to effectively manage these controls.

While gateways operate at the network layer and facilitate the regulation and tracking of data movement, they do not address issues stemming from the software layer, such as Last Line of Defence (LLM), deterministic code, or user activities. In the realm of cybersecurity, gateways can be likened to firewalls – they have their utility in certain scenarios but are not foolproof. They can be bypassed, serve as a single point of failure, and potentially provide a false sense of security. Despite their role as perimeter defenses, MCP and API gateways may not entirely prevent data-related incidents, especially those caused by software vulnerabilities.
