Next-Generation iPhone 18: Enhanced Siri AI with 12 GB RAM
Apple is pushing boundaries with its AI advancements in the upcoming iOS 27 release. The new features for Siri AI and Apple Intelligence will primarily be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and later models. However, there are two advanced features that will have more limited availability.
Similar to the situation in 2024, where Apple restricted Apple Intelligence to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the most powerful on-device model in iOS 27 will only be accessible on the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. These are the only models equipped with Apple’s latest A19 Pro chip.
This means that even newer models like the standard iPhone 17 and budget iPhone 17e will miss out on features such as Siri’s expressive voice and advanced dictation. The limitation is not due to processing power but rather memory capacity. The new on-device model will also be available on Macs and iPads with recent M3 or M4 Apple silicon chips and 12 GB or more in memory.
The A19 Pro chip in the iPhone 17 Pro models is the only one with that level of RAM capacity. The A19 chip in the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e still only has 8 GB of RAM. This disparity in memory capacity has been a trend since the A17 Pro chip arrived in 2023, distinguishing the iPhone 15 Pro models from their A16-equipped counterparts.
Apple has not disclosed a comprehensive list of features that will not be accessible on older models. Craig Federighi mentioned expressive voices and advanced dictation as examples, but there may be additional features that require the more powerful on-device AI model.
On-device processing is essential for real-time features like voice responses and dictation, explaining why Apple prefers to keep these processes local rather than relying on cloud services. However, features like high-quality AI image generation will likely still utilize Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers.
Despite the limitations, Apple is expected to continue innovating. Reports suggest that the iPhone 18 will come with 12 GB of RAM, a significant upgrade from previous models. The upcoming iPhone release cycle is anticipated to be split more distinctly, with the lower-cost models likely to receive full Apple Intelligence capabilities with 12 GB of RAM.
Overall, Apple’s commitment to AI advancements and hardware upgrades continues to shape the future of mobile technology. While older models may miss out on some features, the evolution of Apple’s hardware and software ecosystem ensures that users will continue to experience cutting-edge technology.
