Phil Schiller Steps Down as Head of App Store and Apple Events

Long-serving Apple executive Phil Schiller has announced his decision to step down from his leadership role overseeing the App Store and Apple events, as reported by Bloomberg. Despite this change, Schiller will retain his title as Apple Fellow and will be focusing on undisclosed projects, according to Bloomberg.

Schiller’s Impressive Career at Apple

Having joined Apple back in 1987, Schiller rose to become the company’s marketing chief in 1997. He was instrumental in the launch of the App Store in collaboration with Steve Jobs in 2008, eventually taking over its leadership in 2015. Schiller has been a key figure in the development of various iconic Apple products such as the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Macs, often presenting them at Apple’s major events. Notably, in 2020, he passed on his senior vice president of marketing role to Greg Joswiak, marking a transition in his responsibilities.

Leadership Changes at Apple

The timing of Schiller’s announcement coincides with the impending appointment of John Ternus as the new hardware leader, set to succeed Apple CEO Tim Cook on September 1st. Bloomberg reports that Apple is restructuring its App Store division under the supervision of services head Eddy Cue. Carson Oliver will continue to oversee the store, supported by Ann Thai, who manages app distribution tools and third-party marketplaces.

Apple’s Response

In response to queries from The Verge, Apple has not yet provided a comment on the recent developments.
