The smartphone market in China has seen a decline overall, but sales of foreign-made devices, particularly Apple’s iPhone, have been performing well. According to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), shipments of non-Chinese smartphones, including the iPhone, increased by 66.3% in June compared to the same month last year. While the overall market saw a 15.3% decrease in sales, with only 19.15 million smartphones sold, 3.28 million of those were foreign-made.

Apple’s success in the Chinese market is crucial, as the company has experienced a decline in iPhone sales in China over the past few years. The recent surge in iPhone sales in China indicates improving trade relations between the US and China. In the past, tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump led Chinese users to favor locally made smartphones. However, the iPhone’s popularity in China has been on the rise, contributing to Apple’s record-breaking March 2026 quarter.

Tim Cook attributed the increased sales to the success of the iPhone 17 in China, stating that the product resonated well with customers. Overall Apple sales in China rose by 38% year over year, marking a significant turnaround after years of decline. The iPhone also continues to be popular globally, with a high percentage of US iPhone buyers already being iPhone owners.

Apple has been successful in attracting customers from the Android camp, with a steady stream of Android users switching to the iPhone. This trend, coupled with the loyalty of existing iPhone users, ensures the continued success of the iPhone lineup. Apple’s seamless integration with other products like the Mac and iPad further solidifies its position in the market.
