‘Regretful Apologies: Outbound Developers Face Backlash for Review Request’
Outbound: The Controversial Launch of a Cozy Survival Game
Indie game releases often generate significant hype, but the launch of Square Glade Games’ Outbound has sparked a different kind of conversation. Despite amassing over 1.5 million wishlists, the game’s reception on Steam and consoles has been mixed following its recent release.
Initially scheduled for April, the game was delayed to May and then pushed forward to May 11th to avoid clashing with the launch of Subnautica 2 on May 14th. The concept of Outbound offers players a unique experience in an open-world setting, where they navigate a colorful landscape, customize a mobile home, gather resources, and survive on the road.
However, early reviews on Steam have highlighted concerns about the game’s repetitive gameplay loop and lack of depth. Players have criticized the limited progression, minimal challenges, and shallow exploration, leading to a divisive reception.
Issues such as a small map size, slow pacing, technical glitches, and pricing discrepancies have also been raised by players, with some feeling that the game’s launch version does not justify its price tag of around $20–25. The introduction of day-one DLC, including a school bus vehicle pack, further fueled discontent among the community.
Controversy escalated when developers were seen responding to negative Steam reviews, prompting accusations of attempting to influence review scores. In response to the backlash, the developers issued a public apology on the Steam community forums, acknowledging their missteps in communication and promising to address player feedback and issues promptly.

Following the response, the developers emphasized their commitment to addressing player concerns and stated that they would no longer request users to alter negative reviews. They expressed gratitude for the feedback received, acknowledging its importance in improving the game’s quality.
Steam’s review guidelines explicitly prohibit developers from manipulating review scores, underscoring the significance of maintaining transparency and integrity in user feedback. One user highlighted the importance of constructive criticism and the potential consequences of undermining trust by influencing reviews.
As the controversy continues to unfold, the Outbound community remains divided on the game’s merits and the developers’ handling of feedback. Despite the challenges faced post-launch, Square Glade Games has committed to addressing issues and enhancing the player experience.
