New treatment for inflammatory bowel disease lands Microbiotica €42 million

Microbiotica, a leading British biopharmaceutical company, has successfully closed the first round of its Series C financing, raising an impressive €42 million (£36 million). The funding round was spearheaded by the British Business Bank, with significant contributions from Tencent, IP Group, Cambridge Innovation Capital, Flerie Invest, and Seventure Partners, as well as existing Series B investors.

Tim Sharpington, the CEO of Microbiotica, expressed gratitude for the support from investors and highlighted the company’s progress in translating its genomics-driven microbiome platform into clinical-stage products. The focus now is on advancing MB310, a potential breakthrough treatment for ulcerative colitis, into Phase 2 clinical development.

Microbiotica’s successful financing round is part of a larger trend in European biotech investments in 2026. Other notable investments include Germany’s mbiomics securing €12 million, UK-based OutPost Bio raising €2.9 million, France’s Bionyra Pharma receiving €143 million, and Paris-based Generare raising €20 million. Additionally, London-based Alchemab Therapeutics secured €29.3 million from the British Business Bank.

Carmine Circelli, Senior Investment Director at the British Business Bank, praised Microbiotica’s potential as a global leader in microbiome therapeutics. The company’s Phase 1b study in ulcerative colitis showed promising results, paving the way for further clinical trials.

Founded in 2016 as a spin-out of the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Microbiotica has developed a cutting-edge genomics-driven microbiome platform. This platform, combined with advanced bioinformatics and machine learning tools, has enabled the company to identify bacteria associated with positive clinical outcomes in specific patient populations.

Dr. Sam Williams, Venture Partner at IP Group, commended Microbiotica’s progress and expressed confidence in the company’s precision microbiome approach. The company’s MB310 capsule, designed for ulcerative colitis patients, has shown promising results in Phase 1b trials and is set to advance to Phase 2 development.

Ulcerative colitis, a common form of inflammatory bowel disease affecting millions globally, presents a significant unmet medical need. Microbiotica’s MB310 capsule, with its unique mechanism of action and favorable safety profile, aims to address this need by promoting gut epithelial barrier repair and delivering anti-inflammatory effects.

The successful financing will enable Microbiotica to advance MB310 into Phase 2 clinical development for ulcerative colitis, building on the positive results from the Phase 1b study. The company is also progressing its precision microbiome asset, MB097, for patients with advanced melanoma. Transform the following text to what?
