Rumors are swirling as Apple gears up to unveil iOS 27, with whispers hinting at exciting new features in the upcoming iPhone software update. While the spotlight is on the anticipated Siri makeover and the introduction of a chatbot app, iOS 27 promises to bring AI smarts to various aspects of the iPhone experience.

Insider sources revealed to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman that Apple is planning a significant revamp of its built-in photo-editing tools. This overhaul will introduce a new suite of features powered by Apple Intelligence, building on the foundation laid by the Clean Up tool introduced in iOS 18.1.

Apple’s venture into AI photo editing began with the Clean Up tool, inspired by Google’s Magic Erase feature. While Apple has been playing catch-up in this space, it aims to differentiate itself by integrating these tools seamlessly into the iPhone, iPad, and Mac ecosystem. Emphasizing on-device processing ensures user privacy and security, a key selling point against cloud-based alternatives.

Exciting New Tools on the Horizon

According to Gurman’s sources, iOS 27 will introduce three new tools in the Photos app’s editing interface under the “Apple Intelligence Tools” section. These tools aim to enhance user experience within Apple’s secure environment:

  1. Extend: This tool allows users to generate new content to expand a photo, offering creative possibilities like filling in surrounding scenery with intuitive controls.
  2. Enhance: By applying AI models, this tool automatically improves color, lighting, and image quality, enhancing the overall visual appeal of photos.
  3. Reframe: Tailored for spatial photos, this tool enables users to shift perspectives, potentially opening up new creative avenues for photography enthusiasts.

While these features are not yet finalized, with some still yielding inconsistent results in testing, they are expected to require Apple Intelligence-capable devices for optimal performance.

As the tech world eagerly anticipates Apple’s WWDC in June, where these features may be showcased, it remains to be seen if they will debut in iOS 27.0. With Siri 2.0 also in the works, Apple has a lot on its plate, but the promise of innovative AI-powered photo editing tools adds an exciting dimension to the iOS ecosystem.
