Revving Up: The Design Evolution of V8 Power with a Release Date

BMW has officially confirmed the arrival of the second-generation flagship SUV, the X7, for 2027. The production will take place at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, with the first cars expected to be 2028 models. The CEO at the time, Oliver Zipse, confirmed this during a Q&A session after BMW’s annual conference in March.

Reports on the exact production date vary, with some sources claiming August 2027 and others suggesting the fall of the same year. Regardless, production is expected to start in the second half of 2027, with the first units rolling off the production line by the end of the year. This will determine the model year for different markets, with the US likely to get the 2028 model year.

The second-generation X7 will retain its distinctive split headlights and large kidney grille. Dealers who have seen the car describe a boxier and more wagon-like profile, distinguishing it further from the X5. The range of engines will include inline-sixes, diesel options, a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 in the X7 M60 xDrive, and the introduction of the first-ever electric iX7, skipping the plug-in hybrid variant.

The design of the new X7 features a split tailgate, a feature that remains open to speculation. Each prototype has showcased this design element, but it remains to be seen if it will be retained in the final production model. The lineup will also include an iX7, the first fully electric X7 model, along with various engine options.

Inside, the X7 is expected to feature the latest iDrive X system, Panoramic Vision, and a large central touchscreen. Other expected features include automatic doors, third-row seating, rear massage seats, and the option for two-tone paint finishes. The competition in the luxury SUV segment is fierce, with rivals like the Range Rover Electric and the Genesis GV90 already in the market.
