The Future of Electric Luxury: Exploring the 2027 BMW i3 Touring and Neue Klasse Wagon Lineup
BMW recently unveiled the i3 sedan during a world premiere event on March 18, where former CEO Oliver Zipse hinted at the upcoming release of the 3 Series Touring in its fully electric version. Codenamed NA1, the BMW i3 Touring is set to cater to a specific type of buyer who desires the range, charging speed, and software of the Neue Klasse but refuses to compromise on the practicality of a wagon.
Scheduled to start production in Munich in August, with European deliveries expected in the fall and US availability in 2027, the i3 Touring will share the production line with the sedan. However, production is not set to begin before the second half of 2027 at the earliest. This delay is attributed to Munich’s transformation into one of BMW’s first fully EV-dedicated plants, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. As a result, the traditional combustion 3 Series Touring (G51) will no longer be manufactured in Munich but in Dingolfing and possibly Mexico.
The design of the i3 Touring closely resembles that of the sedan, with a shared front-end design up to the B-pillar. However, the Touring distinguishes itself with a wagon-style rear end, featuring a near-vertical rear end for increased cargo space. Renderings of the i3 Touring suggest a sleek and practical design that combines the sedan’s aesthetics with the functionality of a wagon.
Expected to launch with the same trim options as the sedan, the i3 Touring lineup is likely to include the i3 30, i3 40, i3 50, and i3 M60 models. The i3 50 xDrive, for instance, is anticipated to offer two motors producing 463 hp, a 108.7-kWh net battery, and fast charging capabilities. Pricing details are yet to be confirmed, but the sedan’s starting price of €65,900 in Germany provides a reference point for the Touring model.
The i3 Touring is designed to cater to buyers who value both range and practicality, offering a spacious trunk comparable to traditional wagons. The i3 Touring is poised to attract individuals who appreciate the versatility and style of wagons, signaling BMW’s commitment to the Touring nameplate even in the electric era.
In conclusion, the BMW i3 Touring represents a significant step towards sustainable mobility, combining cutting-edge technology with practical design for discerning buyers. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting addition to BMW’s electric vehicle lineup. Transform the following:
