The Quiet Revolution: Embracing the Whisper-filled Office of Tomorrow
The Future of Work: Conversing with Computers
As technology continues to advance, the way we interact with our computers is evolving. The increasing popularity of dictation apps like Wispr, which can now be integrated with vibe-coding tools, is raising questions about how our work setups may change. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal delves into this phenomenon and explores its potential impact on office etiquette.
According to a venture capitalist, visiting startup offices nowadays feels more like entering a high-end call center. Edward Kim, co-founder of Gusto, predicts that offices of the future will resemble bustling sales floors, where verbal communication takes precedence over typing. While some embrace this shift, others find it disconcerting, reminiscing about past experiences that involved working in noisy sales environments.
Kim himself has embraced dictation to the point where he only types when absolutely necessary. However, he acknowledges that speaking aloud in a professional setting can feel somewhat awkward. Similarly, AI entrepreneur Mollie Amkraut Mueller has encountered challenges with her new habit of whispering to her computer, prompting adjustments in her work dynamic with her husband.
Despite these initial hurdles, Wispr founder Tanay Kothari remains optimistic about the future of verbal interaction with technology. He believes that conversing with computers will become as commonplace as spending hours glued to our smartphones. Just as staring at screens has become ingrained in our daily routines, Kothari envisions a future where verbal commands and dictation are the norm in office environments.
