Google Gemini can book an Uber or order food for you with new agentic AI features

Google’s Gemini AI Becoming More like a Personal Assistant

Google’s Gemini AI is taking a significant step towards resembling a real personal assistant. Initially launching on select Pixel 10 phones and the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, Gemini will now have the capability to book an Uber ride or place a DoorDash order independently.

Task Automation with Gemini

This new feature, known as task automation, begins with a simple command to Gemini, such as “Get me an Uber to the Palace of Fine Arts.” Gemini then initiates the required app in a virtual window on your device and systematically goes through the entire process. Users have the option to monitor the automation progress, intervene if necessary, or allow Gemini to work in the background. The assistant will prompt you if a decision is needed or if an item requested is unavailable. Once the task is completed, Gemini will notify you to review and finalize the order.

Android’s Evolution into an “Intelligence System”

According to Android ecosystem president Sameer Samat, this innovation signifies a shift from viewing Android solely as an operating system to recognizing it as an “intelligence system.” This automation capability is not restricted to Gemini alone. Samat reveals that this feature will be integrated into Android’s upcoming major release, Android 17.

Gemini’s Automation Process

How does Gemini manage to compile your food order? Demonstrations have shown Gemini 3 navigating through apps, making selections, and considering alternatives using reasoning. App developers can also enable specific actions through MCP or Android’s app functions framework. Where such integrations are absent, Gemini will autonomously analyze and execute tasks. Samat emphasizes the importance of supporting various technology stacks to enable a versatile assistant capable of handling diverse tasks.

Implications for App Developers

As Gemini assumes more control over app usage, concerns may arise among developers regarding user engagement and promotional opportunities within apps. Samat acknowledges the inevitability of this technological advancement and encourages collaboration within the developer community to adapt to these changes seamlessly.

Future Outlook

While task automation is currently limited to a few apps like Uber and Grubhub, it will soon be available for early preview on the S26 series, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL devices in the US and Korea. This marks the beginning of a journey towards a future where AI assistants like Gemini take on a more proactive role in user interactions.
