Sony to Rebrand PlayStation Network: What You Need to Know

Posted on June 15, 2021 by Insider Gaming

Upcoming Changes to PlayStation Network

An email leaked to Insider Gaming has disclosed Sony’s decision to rebrand the PlayStation Network (PSN) by phasing out the current branding and name. While PSN will still be operational, it will be referred to by a different name.

The email from Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) explained that the changes are purely cosmetic and will not impact the functionality of the platform. The terms “PlayStation Network” and “PSN” will be gradually eliminated from all SIE assets by September 2026 to streamline and unify branding.

All existing features associated with PSN, including multiplayer, friends, and trophies, will remain intact and accessible to users. Sony plans to notify users ahead of the changes in conjunction with the Technical Requirements Checklist (TRC) update scheduled for the fall of 2026.

Developers will need to align with the updated TRC and adhere to the new branding guidelines to ensure the removal of PSN references from future releases, assets, and external interfaces.

Implications and Challenges of the Rebrand

The proposed rebranding coincides with the 20th anniversary of the PSN in November 2026. However, Sony may face resistance in changing a name that has become deeply entrenched in gaming culture over the years.

The email cites the need to reflect the expanding scope of Sony’s digital services as the rationale behind the rebrand. Despite this explanation, Sony’s digital service offerings beyond the PSN remain relatively limited, with Sony Pictures Core serving as their primary movie streaming platform.

Speculation abounds regarding the potential impact of this rebranding on Sony’s future plans, including the upcoming release of the PS6. However, the enduring moniker “PSN” is likely to persist among users and enthusiasts, regardless of the official rebranding efforts.
