The Fascinating World of BMW Shooting Brakes

BMW shooting brakes have always held a unique position in the automotive universe. The idea of a sports car with a short fastback tail and three doors seems unconventional, yet somehow, the proportions just work. Ever since the introduction of the Z3 Coupé, enthusiasts have been captivated by this distinct silhouette that divides opinions but leaves a lasting impression.

Recently, on April 1st, BMW enthusiasts were treated to a playful glimpse of what a modern M Shooting Brake could look like. BMW of Brooklyn shared an AI-generated video on Instagram showcasing an M2 Shooting Brake based on the M2 CS model in Brooklyn Grey, complete with striking gold wheels. The video quickly garnered thousands of likes, highlighting the undeniable appeal of this unique body style.

While the online reaction was overwhelmingly positive, it raises an important question about whether this enthusiasm would translate into actual sales. Past models like the Z3 Coupé (E36) and the Z4 Coupé (E86) had a more modest reception, despite their distinctive designs. The gap between admiration and purchase decisions remains significant.

However, the spirit of the shooting brake lives on through custom conversion projects like the Z4 Zupra Coupé, which is built on a Toyota Supra platform. These rare creations turn heads due to their exclusivity and unique appeal.

One lesser-known fact is that the BMW Touring Coupe Concept was on the brink of production. Unveiled at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este three years ago, BMW initially planned to produce 50 units at a price of $250,000. Originally conceived as an ALPINA model, it was later rebranded as a BMW due to concerns about the market appeal of a coupe from the ALPINA brand. Nevertheless, the car retained distinctive ALPINA features, such as the wheels and premium leather craftsmanship.

While BMW may not have immediate plans for a new shooting brake model, a select group of owners worldwide will soon experience the exclusive BMW Speedtop, set for deliveries this year. Although the dream of an affordable M2 Shooting Brake may be on hold, it’s worth noting how the BMW M3 Touring transitioned from an April Fool’s joke to a real contender in GT3 racing at the 24-hour race.
