Unveiling the True Speed of the M2 CS at the Nürburgring
Unveiling the BMW M2 CS: A Nürburgring Record-Breaker
- In a thrilling Nürburgring showdown, Sport Auto’s Christian Gebhardt outpaced BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger, clocking a remarkable 7:25.22 lap time in the M2 CS.
- Despite this achievement, the fastest G87-generation M2 around the Nürburgring is still one fitted with the M Performance Track Kit, setting a blistering 7:25.06 lap time.
- While BMW’s plans for a potential return to the Nürburgring with an M2 CS equipped with the new M Performance Track Kit remain undisclosed, the quest for speed continues.
During the buildup to the M2 CS’s debut, BMW shattered the Nürburgring record for the fastest production car in the compact class. Jörg Weidinger, an M development engineer, triumphed with a record-breaking time of 7 minutes and 25.5 seconds, dethroning the Audi RS3 and surpassing the regular M2’s lap time by a staggering 13.2 seconds.
Recently, the M2 CS revisited the Green Hell under new command. Christian Gebhardt of Sport Auto achieved a groundbreaking feat by surpassing BMW’s official lap time, completing the challenging circuit in 7:25.2, a mere three-tenths of a second faster. The achievement is particularly noteworthy as it was accomplished by an independent journalist rather than a BMW driver.
Although not recognized as an official record due to its journalistic nature, BMW retains the title of the fastest Nürburgring lap with an M2. The standard model equipped with the M Performance Track Kit, piloted by Jörg Weidinger, set the benchmark with a time of 7 minutes and 25.0 seconds, solidifying its status as the quickest G87-generation M2 around the iconic track.
Pushing Boundaries with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS Tires
Leading up to the full onboard video release, Sport Auto teased the M2 CS’s performance on Instagram. Notably, the M2 CS was equipped with the high-performance Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires, the same rubber used in its record-setting runs and on the M2 with the M Performance Track Kit.
With potential for further Nürburgring achievements, BMW might consider revisiting the track with an M2 CS fitted with the M Performance Track Kit or exploring the creation of the M2 CSL. As production of the M2 extends until mid-2029, there is ample time for BMW to refine and innovate, potentially setting new records with advancements like the eight-speed automatic transmission.
