iOS 26.5: New features, release date, more

Apple is currently beta testing iOS 26.5 following last month’s release of iOS 26.4. The general public can expect the update to be available next month. Here’s a comprehensive look at the new features and changes that iPhone users can anticipate with iOS 26.5.

iOS 26.5 details

Currently, only iOS 26.5 beta 1 is available to developers and public beta users. Users can access the update by navigating to the Settings app, selecting General, and then choosing Software Update to manage their beta enrollment.

The release of iOS 26.5 beta 2 is expected to happen as early as next week.

iOS 26.5 release date

According to recent reports, iOS 26.5 is likely to be released to the general public in early May. The scheduled release dates for previous versions are as follows:

  • iOS 18.5: Monday, May 12
  • iOS 17.5: Monday, May 13
  • iOS 16.5: Thursday, May 18
  • iOS 15.5: Monday, May 16

iOS 26.5 features and changes

Apple Maps: Suggested Places, ads coming soon

Apple Maps is set to introduce ads this summer. iOS 26.5 prepares for this change by adding the message, “Maps may show local ads based on your approximate location, current search terms, or view of the map while you search.” Additionally, a new Suggested Places feature will display recommendations based on nearby trends, recent searches, and more.

RCS encryption

iOS 26.5 beta 1 reintroduces RCS encryption in the Messages app. The feature is now enabled by default and can be managed in Settings > Messages > RCS Messaging. Unlike the previous update, iOS 26.4, there is no indication that the feature will not ship with iOS 26.5.

App Store purchase options

iOS 26.5 will introduce new purchase options in the App Store, including the ability for developers to bill users monthly with a 12-month commitment. This aligns with common practices on other app store platforms and subscription services.

  • “You can read pricing information for subscriptions that have a monthly with 12-month commitment billing plan configuration…”
  • “You can specify the billing plan type to use for subscriptions that have a monthly with 12-month commitment billing plan configuration…”

EU changes

iOS 26.5 will bring further enhancements for iPhone users in the EU, including Live Activities support for third-party accessories, notifications, proximity pairing, and third-party audio switching.

Magic pairing

Users can now easily pair a Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, or Magic Mouse to their iPhone with iOS 26.5. Connecting one of these accessories via USB-C will automatically establish a Bluetooth connection, eliminating the need for manual pairing in the Settings app.

More iOS 26.5 changes

Additional updates in iOS 26.5 include a new Inuktitut keyboard layout, upcoming Apple Books features such as “Year In Review for 2026,” and enhanced data transfer options when switching from iPhone to Android.

iOS 26.5 wrap up

iOS 26.5 may be a smaller update compared to iOS 26.4, as Apple focuses on the upcoming iOS 27 announcement at WWDC in June. Users are encouraged to share any additional iOS 26.5 changes they notice and suggest any last-minute updates before iOS 27 takes center stage.
