Anthropic’s Secret AI Discovery: Uncovering Thousands of External Vulnerabilities
Anthropic, a leading AI company, has developed an advanced AI model known as Claude Mythos Preview, which has successfully identified numerous cybersecurity vulnerabilities in major operating systems and web browsers. Rather than releasing this model to the public, Anthropic has discreetly provided it to organizations responsible for maintaining the internet’s security.
This groundbreaking initiative, named Project Glasswing, has garnered support from industry giants such as Amazon Web Services, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and more.
In addition to the core partners, Anthropic has granted access to over 40 other organizations involved in critical software infrastructure. The company has allocated up to US$100 million in credits for utilizing Mythos Preview and has also pledged US$4 million in donations to open-source security groups.
A Revolutionary AI Model
Mythos Preview, originally not designed for cybersecurity tasks, has demonstrated exceptional capabilities in identifying and addressing vulnerabilities. The model’s proficiency in both patching and exploiting vulnerabilities has pushed Anthropic to focus on zero-day vulnerabilities.
Noteworthy discoveries by Mythos Preview include a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD and a 17-year-old remote code execution vulnerability in FreeBSD. The model autonomously identified and exploited these flaws, showcasing its advanced capabilities.
Nicholas Carlini from Anthropic’s research team highlighted the model’s ability to chain vulnerabilities, leading to sophisticated outcomes. The model’s prowess has enabled the discovery of numerous bugs in a short period.
Reasons for Restricted Release
Anthropic has chosen not to make Claude Mythos Preview widely available due to its potent cybersecurity capabilities. The company is wary of the potential misuse of such advanced AI capabilities, which could have severe repercussions on economies and national security.
Recent incidents, including a cyberattack orchestrated by a Chinese state-sponsored group using AI agents, have underscored the risks associated with deploying advanced AI for malicious purposes.
Addressing Open-Source Security
Project Glasswing extends its focus to open-source software security, aiming to empower maintainers with AI-driven cybersecurity solutions. Anthropic’s contributions to Alpha-Omega, OpenSSF, and the Apache Software Foundation are pivotal in enhancing the security of critical open-source projects.
Future Prospects
Anthropic envisions deploying Mythos-class models at scale with enhanced safeguards in place. The company plans to debut the Claude Opus model to refine security protocols before considering broader deployment of advanced AI models.
The landscape of AI cybersecurity is evolving rapidly, with initiatives like Project Glasswing setting the standard for controlled deployment of high-capability models. Collaboration between industry leaders is key to navigating the challenges posed by advancing AI technologies.
