Google-Infused Gemini Cars Hit the Road
Google is gearing up to enhance vehicles equipped with Google built-in by introducing its new Gemini AI assistant. This update, as announced by Google, will replace the current Google Assistant and is expected to offer a superior user experience for natural conversations, accessing vehicle-specific information, adjusting settings, and more.
In the announcement, Google’s senior product manager, Alankar Agnihotri, emphasized the company’s commitment to continuously improving cars with Google built-in. This commitment extends not only to new vehicles but also to existing ones through a software update. The Gemini AI assistant will bring advanced features to enhance the overall driving experience.
While General Motors had previously announced that Gemini would be integrated into 4 million model year 2022 and newer vehicles, including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC models, Google’s announcement did not specify exclusive support for GM vehicles. The software update will initially be rolled out in English in the US and will gradually expand to other regions and languages in the coming months.
The Gemini AI assistant is designed to enable drivers to have more natural interactions with their vehicles. It can assist with tasks like recommending nearby restaurants, suggesting playlists, summarizing and responding to text messages, providing real-time journey updates, and offering insights into your car, including electric vehicle information like current battery levels.
Users who are signed into their Google Account in their car will receive the option to upgrade to Gemini. Google also plans to incorporate features that allow drivers to safely access information from apps like Gmail, Calendar, and Google Home in the future. The goal is to provide a seamless and personalized experience for drivers while on the road.
