Google’s AI Search: The Disregarded Quest for Information

Google’s AI search is so broken it can ‘disregard’ what you’re looking for

Google’s AI Overviews Facing Challenges with Action-related Queries

Google’s AI Overviews are currently encountering an intriguing issue. Previously, when searching for the term “disregard,” the AI Overview section would provide a response resembling that of a traditional AI chatbot rather than the usual AI summary. However, recent observations reveal a shift in this behavior.

On a Friday afternoon, Google stopped displaying an AI Overview for the term “disregard” altogether. Instead, a list of news stories related to the issue takes precedence. Despite inquiries, Google has not yet issued a response. In a communication with Android Authority, a spokesperson acknowledged the misinterpretation of action-related queries by AI Overviews and assured that a fix is in progress.

Beyond the confusion surrounding “disregard,” Google’s AI Overviews have also struggled with terms like “ignore” and “skip.” For instance, a colleague at The Verge received a message prompting them to specify a topic, task, or question when searching for “ignore.” Similarly, the response to the term “skip” suggested that the initial message may have been a test or a typo.

Despite ongoing issues, Google has yet to rectify the broken responses in AI Overviews for “ignore” and “skip.” While the situation may seem amusing, it is likely a technical glitch that Google will address promptly. Perhaps the aftermath of Google I/O has left even Google Search a bit fatigued.

Updates, May 22nd: Google has discontinued AI Overviews for “disregard” and provided a statement on the matter.
