The Battle Over iPhone Driver’s Licenses: Florida and Rhode Island Stand Firm

With the rise of digital driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet, several states have jumped on board while others have hesitated. Florida, for example, had initially shown interest in supporting Digital ID cards in Apple Wallet but ultimately decided against it. Despite rolling out its own Smart ID app, the state never joined Apple Wallet and eventually removed its app from the App Store due to concerns about government abuse, as voiced by Governor Ron DeSantis.

Rhode Island, on the other hand, has also chosen not to invest in mobile driver’s license (MDL) technology, citing limited use by the TSA as a reason. While some states have embraced digital driver’s licenses and even released free reader apps for age verification, others like Rhode Island and Florida have chosen to hold back.

Currently, sixteen states allow iPhone users to add their driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet, including Arizona, California, Ohio, and Virginia. Puerto Rico and Japan’s My Number Card are also on the list. Despite the reluctance of states like Florida and Rhode Island, North Carolina and Utah are expected to join the trend soon.

Overall, the adoption of digital driver’s licenses varies across states, with some taking a proactive approach and others taking a more cautious stance. As technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how other states navigate the digital ID landscape.
