Amazon recently introduced an upgraded version of its fully autonomous warehouse robot, Proteus, which now features language-based interaction capabilities instead of traditional coding. This advancement reflects Amazon’s ongoing shift towards automation, replacing human workers with cutting-edge robotic technology.

Enhanced AI-Powered Features Streamline Task Assignment

The new AI-powered upgrade allows human employees to communicate with Proteus in a more intuitive manner, assigning tasks just like they would to a colleague. Previously, workers had to rely on specialized software to direct these floor-level robotic systems, which are specifically designed for heavy lifting and cart movement within Amazon’s warehouses. Scott Dresser, vice president of Amazon Robotics, highlights that Proteus can now determine task priorities, routes, and timings based on verbal instructions.

Expanded Operational Capabilities and Deployment Plans

The next-generation Proteus will have a significantly larger operational range compared to current models, which are limited to dock areas. Amazon reveals that the new system can handle tasks in various locations, from container transport upon arrival to assisting employees across fulfillment centers and delivery sites. The company plans to pilot the new system in Europe in the first half of 2027.

Amazon’s Future Robotics Roadmap

Proteus is part of Amazon’s broader robotics strategy, which includes expanding its touch-sensitive robot, Vulcan, and a collaborative tote-handling system to more European sites in the near future. Amazon emphasizes that these technological advancements are aimed at supporting workers and optimizing operations, rather than replacing human employees with robots.
