BYD Shark 6 Performance arrives in Australia – minus some parts

Australian customers who have purchased the new Performance version of BYD’s popular Shark 6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute are facing a slight hiccup in their deliveries. Several hundred examples of the high-output dual-cab vehicles arrived in Australia missing part of their underbody protection.

The Shark 6 Performance, which was unveiled in April as the flagship of the Shark 6 lineup, boasts a larger 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as part of a powerful 350kW/700Nm hybrid system. This model not only offers enhanced performance but also matches the 3500kg braked towing capacity standard in the dual-cab 4×4 ute class dominated by the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.

Unfortunately, a mistake in the Chinese automaker’s manufacturing process led to the initial batch of Shark 6 Performance vehicles reaching Australia without a section of underbody protection that is unique to this grade. This oversight does not affect the vehicle’s performance but is intended to provide additional protection for the underbody during off-road adventures. BYD Australia has assured customers that the missing part will be fitted in July or can be installed during the first service.

The first shipment of Shark 6 Performance vehicles arrived aboard the BYD Zhengzhou, the automaker’s car-carrying vessel that recently docked in Melbourne. Along with the Performance models, the shipment also included examples of the entry-level Shark 6 Dynamic, featuring a cab-chassis body style and the same 321kW/650Nm plug-in hybrid powertrain as the pre-existing Shark 6 Premium.

The Shark 6 has been a top-selling model for BYD in Australia, with the 2025 sales figures reflecting its popularity. In 2026, the Shark 6 continues to be one of the brand’s best-selling vehicles, second only to the Sealion 7 mid-size electric SUV. These models have contributed to BYD’s impressive sales growth, placing the brand second only to Toyota on the Australian sales charts in both April and May 2026.
