BMW’s Next-Generation X5 to Receive Long-Wheelbase Treatment for G78 Model

BMW has officially confirmed that the upcoming next-generation X5, known as the G65, will once again feature a long-wheelbase version, the G78. While initially confirmed for the Chinese market, reports suggest that the X5 G78 will also be making its way to India.

The trend of long-wheelbase models in India is not new, with the 3 Series, 5 Series, and X1 already available in extended versions. The addition of the X5 G78 to the Indian lineup signifies BMW’s commitment to catering to the demand for luxury vehicles in the country.

Exclusive Premiere of the BMW X5 G65

The fifth-generation BMW X5, the G65, is set to make its global debut in the coming days. Following the tradition of its predecessor, the new X5 will have a long-wheelbase variant. Former CEO Oliver Zipse’s announcement earlier this year confirmed the production of a larger X5 for the Chinese market, likely to be the G78 model. The extended version is expected to be unveiled either by the end of the year or in early 2027 and may not be restricted to China alone.

A recent report from Autocar reveals BMW’s plans to introduce the X5 G78 in India, joining the lineup of long-wheelbase models already available in the market. The expansion of long-wheelbase offerings in India includes the 3 Series, 5 Series, and the iX1, with the iX3 and i5 set to follow suit, providing enhanced rear legroom compared to their standard versions.

Global Expansion of Long-Wheelbase Models

Despite ruling out long-wheelbase models for the North American market due to projected low demand, BMW is actively increasing the availability of these models in regions outside China. The introduction of the iX3 NA6 in markets like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand is part of this strategy. BMW remains open to expanding the sales of long-wheelbase vehicles to additional markets based on customer demand.

Enhanced Luxury with Long-Wheelbase BMWs

BMW’s long-wheelbase models offer more than just extended space for rear passengers. The elongated iX3 and i3 models showcase upgraded interiors with premium materials and additional features. The upcoming i5 can even be equipped with the Theatre Screen, a massive 31.3-inch display reminiscent of the flagship 7 Series.

While the exterior styling of long-wheelbase BMWs remains largely unchanged, these models feature larger rear doors and a more spacious cabin to accommodate the extended body. The increase in size also translates to improved cargo capacity, making them versatile options for luxury vehicle buyers.

In markets where long-wheelbase BMWs are offered, customers typically do not have the choice between standard and extended versions. The availability of long-wheelbase models in Asia and India underscores BMW’s commitment to meeting diverse market demands and providing luxurious options for discerning buyers.
