Decoding the Google Pixel Watch 5 LTE: A Comprehensive Guide
Anticipation is high for the upcoming release of the Pixel Watch 5, with leaks surfacing in various forms, including one supposedly discovered at the bottom of the sea.
The latest development is the submission of Google’s flagship smartwatch to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), although this move has sparked some confusion.
The device’s presence in the FCC listings solidifies the impending arrival of the Pixel Watch 5, identified under model numbers G25QD, G1XJ6, G0F3Y, and GFW3R – previously confirmed via BIS listing – all categorized as ‘wireless devices.’
However, the confusion arises from the FCC listings indicating that all four models will feature LTE (4G) in addition to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, hinting at the absence of a more affordable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-only configuration.
The speculation regarding the potential release of a Pro or Ultra model alongside the Pixel Watch 5 is dispelled, as it is likely that all models will share the same internal components, with the 4G functionality possibly being disabled at the firmware level post-manufacturing.
Similarly to vehicles leaving the factory with speed limiters, which can be deactivated, the Pixel Watch 5 may possess the hardware for 4G connectivity but have it disabled initially.
A Significant Revelation
One notable aspect of the Pixel Watch 5’s specifications is the absence of 5G support, diverging from competitors like the Apple Watch Series 11, which are expected to embrace the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite chipset with 5G capabilities.
Despite the potential for the Snapdragon Elite chipset to power rival devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 series, reports suggest that even these devices will be confined to 4G LTE connectivity.
The decision to forego 5G integration may be attributed to the current memory crisis impacting tech prices, rendering the cost of upgrading to 5G unjustifiable, especially when the majority of consumers may not discern or prioritize the benefits of 5G technology.
As a result, manufacturers may opt for more cost-effective options to maintain profit margins and cater to the broader market demand for budget-friendly devices.
The launch of the Pixel Watch 5 is imminent, scheduled to coincide with the release of the Pixel 11 phones in August. Meanwhile, Samsung is gearing up to unveil the Galaxy Watch 9 series, including the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, at its rumored Unpacked event on July 22.
