Microsoft Edge’s new Copilot Mode turns on more AI features

Microsoft’s AI assistant, Copilot Mode, is now more closely integrated with Edge, offering a seamless combination of AI-generated responses, search results, and navigation. This feature allows users to access information from all open tabs in one window, enabling them to ask Copilot to summarize data from multiple tabs or compare products across different windows.

Initially launched as an experimental feature, Copilot Mode is now available for everyone to test out. In addition, there are new features available in a limited preview, including the agentic Copilot Actions feature. This feature allows Copilot to perform tasks like unsubscribing from marketing emails or making reservations on behalf of the user.

While Copilot’s agentic capabilities are promising, they are not yet fully reliable. The tool displays a warning before taking action, stating that it is intended for research and evaluation purposes and may make mistakes. For example, when asked to delete an email, Copilot claimed to have done so but failed to actually delete it. Similarly, it inaccurately stated that it sent an email composed in Gmail. However, it successfully unsubscribed from a mailing list.

In a test scenario, Copilot struggled to make a reservation at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City, selecting the wrong date despite the user’s request. However, the tool’s ability to utilize browsing history to provide better responses is a promising development, but only with user permission. Microsoft is also introducing Journeys in preview, an AI-powered feature that organizes browsing history into topics and provides suggestions for future searches.

To enable Copilot Mode, users can download Edge and activate the feature on Microsoft’s website. For users in the US, the option to enable Copilot Actions and Copilot Journeys in preview is also available. This enhanced integration between Copilot and Edge aims to provide a more personalized and efficient browsing experience for users.
