Exobiosphere’s Mission: Unlocking Space Cures with €1 Million Funding

Exobiosphere, a space BioTech startup based in Luxembourg, is dedicated to drug discovery and biomedical research in microgravity. Recently, the company was granted €1 million in non-dilutive funding through Luxembourg’s Jeune Entreprise Innovante (JEI) aid scheme, administered by the Ministry of the Economy.

This funding will support Exobiosphere’s commercial expansion, operations, and the enhancement of its orbital high-throughput screening platform. Kyle Acierno, the co-founder and CEO of Exobiosphere, expressed gratitude for the support from the Luxembourg innovation ecosystem and Ministry of Economy, stating that the grant comes at a crucial time for the company.

Established in 2024 by Acierno, Dr. Bruno Santos, and Dr. Olivia Borgue, Exobiosphere is developing the world’s first standardized space-based high-throughput testing platform. This platform enables pharmaceutical and BioTech companies to conduct automated experiments in orbit at scale, leading to potential discoveries in drug development.

The core product of Exobiosphere is the Orbital High-Throughput Screening (OHTS) system, capable of running over 2,000 simultaneous automated experiments per mission. This platform facilitates various applications such as disease modeling, stem cell differentiation, and compound potency testing, all in real time.

Exobiosphere’s unique approach involves leveraging microgravity to accelerate biological processes, allowing for the observation of disease mechanisms and drug responses that traditional in-vitro models cannot capture. This opens up new possibilities for research and development in areas like oncology, neurodegeneration, and inflammation.

The JEI program, designed for innovative companies with growth potential, provides non-dilutive public funding to support their expansion. Exobiosphere plans to utilize the funding to further its commercial activities, strengthen its operations, and explore therapeutic areas such as ageing, radiation response, and cardiovascular disease.
