BMW Recalls Over 300,000 Vehicles in the U.S. Due to Starter Defect

BMW has announced a recall of 318,495 vehicles in the United States due to a starter defect that poses a fire risk. The recall affects nine BMW models and the Toyota Supra, including popular models like the X3, X4, 3 Series, 5 Series, and Z4. Owners of these vehicles are urged to check their VIN numbers to see if their vehicle is affected.

Starter Defect Explanation

According to BMW’s filing with the NHTSA, the starter defect can lead to premature wear, causing the starter to malfunction. In some cases, this may result in the engine not starting. However, in more severe instances, attempting to start the vehicle with a faulty starter could generate enough heat to start a fire.

The recall primarily impacts BMW’s four-cylinder lineup, with the X3 bearing the brunt of the affected vehicles. The following models are included in the recall:

• BMW X3 (sDrive30i, xDrive30i) – 210,748 vehicles
• BMW 3 Series (330i, 330i xDrive) – 32,094 vehicles
• BMW X4 (xDrive30i) – 26,866 vehicles
• BMW 5 Series (530i, 530i xDrive) – 11,991 vehicles
• BMW 2 Series Coupe (230i, 230i xDrive) – 11,479 vehicles
• BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe (430i, 430i xDrive) – 9,552 vehicles
• BMW 4 Series Convertible (430i, 430i xDrive) – 8,048 vehicles
• BMW 4 Series Coupe (430i, 430i xDrive) – 5,270 vehicles
• BMW Z4 (sDrive30i) – 2,177 vehicles
• Toyota Supra – 270 vehicles

In addition to BMW models, 270 units of the 2023-2024 Toyota Supra are also included in the recall due to the collaboration between Toyota and BMW on the shared platform for the Z4 and Supra.

Remedy for the Issue

BMW has stated that there have been no accidents or injuries reported as a result of the defect. Dealers will replace the affected starters with a redesigned unit at no cost to owners. This approach mirrors BMW’s previous recalls related to starter issues. Dealer notification for the recall began on July 8, 2026, with owner letters set to be sent out starting August 28, 2026.
