OpenAI pushes ChatGPT into patient health records

OpenAI has recently introduced a Health feature within ChatGPT, allowing users to connect Apple Health data and medical records to the chatbot. This new feature is available to logged-in users aged 18 and older across various tiers such as Free, Go, Plus, and Pro on both web and iOS platforms.

Users can link their Apple Health data and, where applicable, records from US hospital systems, One Medical, or Function Health. Once synced, ChatGPT can retrieve information such as medications, lab results, recent visits, sleep data, and activity logs during any conversation within the app, eliminating the need for a separate health section.

An earlier version of this feature was tested with a smaller group of users, which highlighted the need for a redesign. Rather than confining health-related conversations to a dedicated area, ChatGPT now seamlessly integrates health information into any conversation, provided the user has granted permission.

Feedback from early testers of the Health feature in ChatGPT has been largely positive. Users like Blake, a technical program manager, found the tool helpful in organizing medical history and explaining complex terms in simple language. Reweti, a portfolio manager, emphasized the value of longitudinal analysis in uncovering hidden patterns in health data.

However, not all accounts were without challenges. Shannon, a nurse, discovered an unexpected entry in her chart through the tool, highlighting the importance of AI in helping patients understand and navigate their health information rather than replacing healthcare professionals.

The performance of the AI models behind the Health feature, GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.6 Sol, has been validated through rigorous testing with physicians. The newer GPT-5.6 Sol model excels in reasoning across multiple data points, such as lab trends over time, and outperformed the previous model in various health scenarios.

OpenAI has taken steps to ensure the privacy and security of users’ health data. Permissions are required for accessing connected health data, and users have the option to control how their data is used within the app. Data deletion timelines and memory creation are also carefully managed to protect user privacy.

Overall, the Health feature in ChatGPT aims to provide personalized health insights and support to users, rather than offering diagnostic services. It is recommended that users consult their healthcare providers for any important health-related concerns.

For those interested in exploring the Health feature, it is now available for eligible US users through the sidebar Health menu.
