Microsoft’s Power Move: LG Forced to Remove Unwanted McAfee Ads
Microsoft Intervenes to Stop Annoying McAfee Pop-ups on LG Monitors for Windows 11 Users
In response to user complaints, Microsoft has taken action to prevent Windows 11 users with LG monitors from being bombarded with intrusive McAfee trial pop-ups. Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s Windows chief, announced that LG has agreed to disable the McAfee pop-up immediately from its LG Monitor App Installer. Davuluri further promised ongoing improvements in collaboration with ecosystem partners to address such issues.
Backlash Leads to Crackdown on McAfee and LG Pop-up Ads on Windows 11 PCs
Following widespread backlash, large pop-up ads for McAfee antivirus and LG’s proprietary apps were reported to appear on Windows 11 PCs when connected to LG monitors. Users noted that a Windows driver update silently installed LG driver updates and the LG Monitor App Installer without explicit consent, with complaints dating back to 2024.
LG responded to the criticism with a lengthy statement to Windows Latest, emphasizing that McAfee is not automatically installed and requires user consent. The company explained that the LG Monitor App Installer is distributed through Microsoft’s official Windows process, where McAfee is presented as an option for installation. LG reiterated that McAfee is only installed if the user actively chooses to proceed and provides consent, ensuring that no personal data is accessed, collected, or transmitted.
Industry Trends in Automatic Installation Features
LG’s approach is not unique, as other companies like Dell have also implemented automatic installation features. For instance, Dell previously auto-installed the Alienware Command Center app on Windows when connected to Alienware monitors. However, Dell’s Frank Cestone confirmed a shift to an opt-in installation process for Alienware Command Center in February 2025, requiring explicit user consent.
Recent findings also indicate that LG is displaying intrusive ad notifications on its TVs at startup, prompting concerns about user experience. While Microsoft’s intervention has addressed some issues, it highlights the ongoing challenges posed by unwanted software installations.
