The Latest AI Leadership Changes at Google

Google recently announced significant leadership changes in its AI division, with a major shift for Demis Hassabis, the leader of Google DeepMind. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, revealed that Hassabis will now serve as the chair of Google DeepMind and the chief scientist at Alphabet.

In his new roles, Hassabis will also continue to lead Alphabet’s Isomorphic Labs, a division focused on using AI for drug development. As part of the reshuffle, Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously the CTO of DeepMind, will take on the role of Google’s SVP of DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai. Kavukcuoglu will maintain his position as Google’s chief AI architect.

Hassabis expressed his commitment to using AI to improve human health, particularly in the fight against diseases like cancer. He emphasized the need for AI to demonstrate its value to the world and pledged to work closely with Pichai on strategic AI matters while advising Kavukcuoglu and other DeepMind leaders.

Meanwhile, Jeff Dean, a veteran Googler and the chief scientist of Google DeepMind, is departing to establish an AI-focused public benefit corporation named Discovery Loop with Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat. Pichai announced that Google will be a founding investor in the new venture.

Discovery Loop aims to develop AI solutions for solving key challenges in machine learning, science, and engineering. The company’s mission is to accelerate engineering and scientific discovery processes, ultimately delivering technology solutions that positively impact people’s lives on a global scale.
