Revving Up: A Tribute to Two Decades of MINI GP at BMW Group Classic

July 25 marked a significant day in Munich as more than 20 MINI GPs visited BMW Group Classic to celebrate the iconic MINI GP’s 20-year legacy. The MINI GP journey began with the introduction of the first-generation MINI Cooper S with the JCW GP Kit, known as the GP1, at MINI United in Misano, Italy, in late October 2005. The MINI GP1 was officially released in the summer of 2006, marking the start of a high-performance tradition.

Subsequent generations of the MINI GP continued to push the boundaries of performance and design. The second generation, launched in 2012, featured enhancements such as a coil-over suspension and an aerodynamically active rear diffuser. In 2013, MINI enthusiasts welcomed this turbocharged powerhouse into their collection.

The third and final member of the MINI GP series, the GP3, arrived seven years later with increased size and performance. Boasting a 306 hp 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, the GP3 set a new standard for the series with its distinctive design and interior layout.

Returning to the present day, the MINI GP anniversary event at BMW Group Classic showcased the evolution of the MINI GP family. Attendees had the privilege of viewing iconic models such as the MINI Superleggera by Touring and the original Mr. Bean classic Mini, alongside the exclusive MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept.

Enthusiasts from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the Czech Republic gathered with their own MINI GP cars, totaling 21 vehicles on display. The event culminated in a scenic drive through Munich and a delightful lunch at a local beer garden, where owners reminisced about past experiences and discussed future gatherings.
