The Rise and Fall of Dreame’s Automotive Venture

Dreame made a grand entrance into the automotive industry with its “Starry Sky” project, but the dream has come to an abrupt end. The Chinese company, known for its vacuum and home appliances, has decided to shut down its car business, just a year after making waves in the market.

The company set ambitious goals for itself, especially with its Nebula Next 01 Jet Edition, also known as the “Rocket Car.” This vehicle was touted to go from 0-62 mph in a mind-blowing 0.9 seconds. It boasted a sulfide-based solid-state battery with an impressive energy density of over 450 Wh/kg and a claimed range of more than 550 km (341 miles).

While these numbers seemed extraordinary, reports from former employees suggest that the focus of the project was more on marketing and fundraising than on actually developing a viable production car. One prototype showcased at CES allegedly lacked a traditional chassis and was controlled remotely.

At its peak, Dreame’s automotive division employed close to 1,000 individuals. However, following layoffs that commenced in May, only a handful of employees are reportedly left to oversee the winding down of operations, manage suppliers, and facilitate the closure of associated companies.

With the automotive chapter now closed, Dreame is refocusing its efforts on its core businesses, such as vacuum cleaners, robotic lawnmowers, electric two-wheelers, and robots.
