The AIGreenBots project is a Doctoral Network that aims to foster the development of the next generation of intelligent AI-based agricultural robotics

The AIGreenBots project is a Doctoral Network focused on nurturing the development of intelligent AI-based agricultural robotics for the future. The agricultural sector is rapidly adopting new technologies to meet the growing demand for food production amidst challenges like limited resources and climate change.

Precision agriculture, which involves the use of technology for various aspects of agricultural production and management, has emerged as a crucial approach to ensuring food security, safety, and sustainability. It has also paved the way for advancements in robotics, remote sensing, and AI/ML. However, the transition from research to practical applications in real-world conditions remains a significant hurdle.

AIGreenBots aims to bridge this gap by providing advanced training and hands-on experience to doctoral candidates in the field of agricultural robotics. The project will expose researchers to a wide range of innovative skills and competencies through collaborations with leading academic institutions and SMEs across five countries.

The project’s objectives are divided into five key research work packages focusing on the design and development of robotic platforms, multi-sensor perception systems, machine learning capabilities, decision-making in agricultural settings, and ensuring the safety and legal compliance of agricultural robots.

The training program within AIGreenBots will encompass interdisciplinary training, career development, and research collaborations involving research institutions, agriculture stakeholders, living labs, and SMEs. The project structure includes seven work packages covering research, management, training, dissemination, and public engagement, with a strong emphasis on achieving the research objectives outlined in each work package.

Agricultural robotics is a multidisciplinary field that encompasses various topics such as machinery automation, AI/ML techniques, sensor technology, and remote sensing. AIGreenBots will focus on three main areas: agricultural robotics and machinery, robotic perception and decision-making, and reliable machine learning and safety, with precision agriculture serving as the application domain.

The project’s research program is built on three foundational pillars: research and technology, application domain expertise, and training in transferable skills. By integrating these pillars, AIGreenBots aims to achieve its research objectives and empower the next generation of agricultural robotics researchers.

AIGreenBots comprises 11 individual research projects conducted by doctoral candidates, each focusing on specific aspects of intelligent AI-based agricultural robotics. The project is funded by the European Union under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action Doctoral Network grant.

The research projects cover a wide range of topics such as probabilistic robotic perception, sensing fusion frameworks, transferable skills for robots, self-diagnosis of field robots, multi-sensor models, network architecture for learning, cognitive architecture for robot anticipation, and more. Each project is hosted by leading research institutions and involves secondments to industry partners for practical experience and knowledge transfer.

Overall, AIGreenBots is dedicated to advancing the field of agricultural robotics through cutting-edge research, training, and collaboration, with a focus on developing the next generation of intelligent AI-based solutions for precision agriculture.
