Google’s New Feature: Auto-Expanding AI Search Summaries

According to Search Engine Roundtable, Google has introduced a new feature where AI search summaries are automatically expanded at the top of the results page for certain searches. This change pushes the traditional list of search links further down the results page, providing users with a full AI overview at the top, followed by an “Ask anything” box, and then the list of links. However, this can result in a lot of scrolling for users.

The criteria for these auto-expanding AI Overviews by Google remains unclear. While initially appearing with most test searches, the AI Overviews now typically display only the initial response with a “Show more” button. Even consistent queries like “what is the best game on switch 2” do not always trigger the auto-expanding feature across all searches and browsers.

Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz mentioned to The Verge that for certain queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand based on what their systems determine to be most useful for users. This dynamic experience aims to make Search more helpful and encourage users to engage in further exploration. Kutz also highlighted that if users have already started scrolling to view content below the AI Overview, the expansion is canceled to ensure users do not lose their reading position.
