Surviving the Blackfrost: The Long Dark Continues
The Long Dark Developer Hinterland Studio Shifts Focus to Survival Mode
Hinterland Studio, the developer behind the popular survival game The Long Dark, is making some changes in its development plans. While the sequel, Blackfrost, was announced in 2024, the studio has decided to shift its focus to The Long Dark’s survival mode for the time being.
Earlier this year, The Long Dark’s story mode concluded with the release of Wintermute’s fifth and final episode. Despite initial assumptions that attention would turn to Blackfrost, Hinterland has decided to prioritize the ongoing development of the survival mode.
In a recent Steam blog post, the developer explained the reasons behind this shift in focus. Changes in the gaming industry, geopolitical complexities, and shifting player behaviors have influenced Hinterland’s decision to invest more in The Long Dark’s survival mode.
Over the next two years, Hinterland has outlined two main plans for The Long Dark. The first involves continuous updates to the survival mode, including bug fixes, quality of life improvements, and the addition of content from Wintermute’s fifth episode.
Additionally, the studio plans to introduce paid DLC for The Long Dark, offering new ways to enhance the player experience. Details about the DLC are limited, but Hinterland promises that they will provide unique expansions to the game.
As for Blackfrost, the sequel to The Long Dark, Hinterland reassures fans that development is still ongoing. While some team members have been reassigned to support the survival mode and DLC work, a gameplay reveal for Blackfrost is expected before the end of the year.
Despite these changes, Hinterland Studio remains committed to delivering Blackfrost to its eager fanbase. The studio’s decision to focus on The Long Dark’s survival mode reflects their dedication to providing a quality gaming experience amidst industry challenges.
