Launching the Future: Implementation of AI at the Factory Begins
The Launch of the Innovative RO AI Factory Project
Commencing its implementation phase on 1 September, the RO AI Factory project is poised to become fully operational by the conclusion of 2027. Spearheaded by the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics (ICI Bucharest), this groundbreaking initiative aims to offer cutting-edge computing infrastructure dedicated to the advancement and testing of artificial intelligence models.
Adrian-Victor Vevera, the general director of ICI Bucharest, envisions the RO AI Factory as a pivotal hub that fosters collaboration among research entities, educational institutions, businesses, and governmental bodies. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the development of innovative projects and solutions by leveraging state-of-the-art infrastructure, expert knowledge, and collective efforts.
Funded by the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) through the Horizon-JU-EuroHPC-2025-AI call, the RO AI Factory is set to revolutionize the landscape of artificial intelligence in Romania and beyond.
Empowering Diverse Organizations
With a commitment to inclusivity, the RO AI Factory will extend its services to a wide array of organizations, including universities, research institutions, technology firms, industrial entities, and public agencies. Key offerings include access to high-performance computing resources, support for AI model development and training, data infrastructure, algorithm libraries, and tools for creating ethically sound artificial intelligence solutions.
Of particular significance is the emphasis placed on assisting small and medium enterprises as well as startups in harnessing AI technologies to enhance their products and services. In addition to infrastructure access, these entities will benefit from technical guidance, training programs, mentorship, and assistance with testing and validation processes.
Integration into the EuroHPC JU Network
As a pivotal member of the EuroHPC JU network, the RO AI Factory project is led by the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest in collaboration with esteemed partners such as the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, the National Institute of Research and Development for Biological Sciences, and various other prominent entities.
By joining forces with EuroHPC, Romania anticipates gaining access to a wealth of resources, expertise, and opportunities for cross-border collaboration. This strategic partnership is poised to elevate the nation’s standing in the global AI landscape and pave the way for groundbreaking innovations.
Located at ICI Bucharest, the high-performance computing infrastructure of the RO AI Factory will be meticulously maintained and supported to ensure seamless integration and operation. The project’s initial phases will focus on facility preparation, hardware installation, service integration, and connectivity to national and European networks, with plans for continuous expansion of the service portfolio and ecosystem.
