The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and NAISS Inaugurate Arrhenius Supercomputer in Sweden

In a collaborative effort, the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) and the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS) have unveiled Arrhenius, a cutting-edge supercomputer situated in Sweden.

Named in honor of the renowned Swedish geologist and chemist Carl Axel Arrhenius, who made significant contributions to the field by discovering rare earth elements, the supercomputer was acquired through a contract signed with HPE in July 2025, valued at EUR 68.5 million.

With up to 35% co-funding from the EuroHPC JU, sourced from the Digital Europe Programme (DEP) and contributions from the Swedish Research Council to NAISS, Arrhenius represents a pivotal advancement in the European supercomputing landscape.

Key Features of Arrhenius Supercomputer

Arrhenius stands as a mid-range supercomputer with a remarkable processing capability exceeding 60 petaflops, positioning it at the 42nd spot in the latest TOP500 list of the world’s most potent supercomputers. This state-of-the-art system is engineered to handle intricate simulations and compute-intensive AI applications, facilitating advancements in various fields such as climate modeling, materials science, life sciences, and engineering.

Catering to a diverse user base spanning across Europe, including researchers, industries, and the public sector, Arrhenius boasts robust security measures and data integrity standards, making it ideal for confidential research and proprietary product development.

Furthermore, Arrhenius excels in energy efficiency, delivering over 61 billion operations per watt and securing the 24th rank on the Green500 list, underscoring its sustainable computing capabilities.

Empowering European Researchers

European researchers have already begun leveraging Arrhenius through the EuroHPC AI for science access call, granting them early access to the supercomputer’s advanced functionalities. The system is now accessible to a broader audience through regular access calls, benchmark modes, and development opportunities provided by EuroHPC.

As part of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking’s commitment to enhancing Europe’s supercomputing infrastructure, Arrhenius joins a lineup of 12 supercomputers strategically distributed across the continent.

The official unveiling of Arrhenius took place at Linköping University, featuring a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event attended by key figures including Anders Dam Jensen, EuroHPC JU Executive Director, and Lotta Edholm, Minister for Upper Secondary School, Higher Education and Research.
