Samsung’s Galaxy Z Trifold 2 Takes on iPhone Duo in Battle for Supremacy

Samsung recently welcomed Apple to the folding smartphone market, but it seems that the iPhone Duo has sparked some concerns among Samsung executives. Hee-Cheul Moon, a key figure in Samsung’s R&D department, shared with Wired that they view the competition from Apple as a positive development.

Despite currently holding a 38% share of the folding smartphone market, Samsung is facing a prediction from Counterpoint that Apple will dominate with a 40% market share within the next year. While foldable smartphones only represent 2% of the overall market currently, Counterpoint anticipates significant growth in this segment over the next 12 months, with a projected 24% growth this year and 37% growth next year.

Various brands, including Samsung, Apple, Google, Honor, Vivo, Huawei, Motorola, Oppo, and Xiaomi, are expected to introduce new foldable smartphones. However, all eyes are on Apple as the one to watch in this evolving market.

Reports suggest that Samsung is hastening the launch of its Galaxy Z Trifold 2 in response to Apple’s iPhone Duo. The second-generation Trifold is said to be thinner, lighter, and more durable than its predecessor. Samsung aims to keep the price of the new device similar to the original, which sold for $2,900 but faced poor sales and was discontinued after just three months.

Samsung’s previous foldable phones have been criticized for reliability issues, particularly with dust getting trapped in the folds. In contrast, Apple’s iPhone Duo boasts a dust-proof rating of IP68, while Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 8 is rated only to IP48.

Chinese leaker “Lanzuk” suggests that the Galaxy Z Trifold 2 will debut in 2027 and aims to address the competition from Apple by offering a more advanced and competitively priced device. Despite setbacks with the original Trifold, Samsung is determined to make a mark in the foldable smartphone market.
